Star Trek, When did Captain Kirk become Luke Skywalker

I want to preface this post by saying, I loved the new Star Trek. LOVED IT. I want to go see it again. I wish I could go multiple times like I could in my youth. I would like to see it multiple times to see if I could find R2-D2. I wish I could replace my eye balls with digital viewing screens just to be able to see Star Trek.

With that said there is one wrinkle that stops me from turning myself into Jordie. And that is the New Captain Kirk. The original Kirk is the master of all. He knows the text book, so don't go quoting it because he probably wrote most of it. He knows the science around the ship and has an IQ that make Einstein wish he had more sex. He is the best at what he does and what he does is lead man. If you are on the Enterprise and you see Kirk in the chair you know he will see you through misfortune, unless you are a faceless peon wearing a red shirt.

This new "Kirk" is suffering from what I call Skywalker syndrome. Skywalker Syndrome is the medical term for destiny calling. Skywalkers have dealt with it differently. Luke was whiny and we love him for it. Anakin was whiny and we hate him for it. Leia slept with Han Solo and we wish we were there for that. "Kirk" just knows he will be great and really, it makes him a douche.

We know this new "Kirk" is destined to become great and so does he. He does not need to work for it because the universe will give it him. The screen where he finally takes the captain chair should have been a moment of pure childhood glee but instead it is replaced by the feeling of a catheter being inserted. It was just horrible and really it could have been on of those screens we will always remember but now it will be one of those screens, at least for me, I will probably fast forward when I get the DVD.

"Kirk" aside this movie is a must see. From Zachary Quinto's Spock to Simon Pegg's Scottie all the love is there. You just need to sit down, shut off your cell phones and enjoy the experience of Star Trek.
